Record Video/Images Straight into #Google #Drive #iPad App

" Is there a way to create recordings right into google drive?" asks Kristin Hokanson. The answer is "YES!"

Looking for a quick-n-easy way to store photos/images or, more importantly, videos from your iPad into Google Drive? Look no further than the Drive iPad app which allows you to accomplish both goals!

Start up Google Drive, then tap on the + symbol in the top right hand corner of your iPad screen:

Notice the USE CAMERA option in that ADD menu!

To begin recording video, tap on USE CAMERA and switch to Video camera...you can see the selector below:

After you're done recording...tap on USE and you'll be prompted as shown below:

When you're done, you'll see your Google Drive docs, and at the bottom, the video file you just created:

Pretty nifty, huh? Thanks to the GCTs list for discussing this and prompting me to go investigate! You can easily share a folder of videos with the world, all hosted by GoogleDrive.

Video: A Pep Talk

If you haven't seen this videoA Pep Talk from Kid President to You, it's definitely worth watching:

iPad Workflows - Getting Work on/off your iPad

As iPads find their way into schools, one of the key issues becomes how to adapt our workflows--what we actually do on the devices--to achieve instructional objectives. Often, technology can be purchased because it's "great, wonderful" without a clear awareness that HOW we approach completion of a task will have to change.

After all, if the iPad makes things easier, that means we may have to unlearn and learn a few things to achieve the benefit! This blog entry shares a few approaches that make things easier. Each approach is introduced by a scenario that I've actually heard teachers experience.

Getting Ready - Adjust Your Settings!
Note: These workflows depend on several apps available at no charge on iOS devices. You will need to adjust the settings on these apps to reflect the following information:
AppSettings to Adjust
Readdle Documents

Cost: Free on iPad.
General Tab: This tab covers security and protection. You can leave settings as is.
Wi-Fi Drive: Switch the “Enable Drive” setting to ON. If in a public environment, turn ON “Ask for Password.”
Sync: If using iCloud, choose the appropriate Automatic Sync setting or disable it. Set “Use New WebDAV Engine” to ON.
File Manager: Switch the “Show Photos” to ON. This will allow you to make copies of photos/videos you have in your Camera Roll/Photo Library.

That’s all! Tap on “Close” to finish adjusting settings.
Google Drive

Cost: Free on iPad
There are no settings to adjust except initial login to your Google Drive using your credentials.

Workflow #1 - Copying content to and from an iPad with a computer.
Scenario: I have images/pictures, videos, PDF files, ePub-formatted eBooks that I want to copy to my iPad from my computer, AND I have content on my computer that I want to put on my iPad.

Copying Files to Where You Can Work With Them
1) Open Readdle Documents app, then select photos you want to work with in Documents. When done selecting, tap on the SAVE button.
2) Select the folder you want to save the picture or video in within Documents.

Sharing Your Saved Picture or Video
3) Tap on NETWORK to turn on your iPad's Wi-Fi Drive. To share with a computer, tap the the WiFi icon in the top right-hand corner.
4) Notice the message that appears:
“Connect to this iPad using web-browser or WebDAV app:” then provides two addresses. Either one will work for our purposes.
4) Go to your computer's Internet browser and type in the IP address for your iPad. You will see any content you have in the Documents app folders available.
5) Get or put content from your iPad by clicking filenames or  or Browse-Upload buttons,
respectively.

Workflow #2 - Copying content from many iPads (e.g. students’ iPads) to one iPad (e.g. teacher’s iPad) using Readdle’s Documents app.
Scenario: My students have spent the last week creating their video in SonicPics and PinnacleStudio and have exported it to the Camera Roll on their iPad. How do I get those videos onto my iPad without using GoogleDrive, Dropbox, etc.?

Student iPad Instructions - Sharing Your Saved Picture or Video
1) Open Readdle Documents app, then select photos/videos you want to share with your teacher in Documents. When done selecting, tap on the SAVE button.
2) Select the folder you want to save the picture or video in within Documents. This makes a copy of the photos/videos in your Camera Roll and saves them in Documents app.
3) Tap on NETWORK to turn on your iPad's Wi-Fi Drive.
4) Your iPad is now available to be connected to by others (e.g. Teacher) using Readdle
Documents.

Teacher iPad Instructions: Copying Files to Where You Can Work With Them
1) Open Readdle Documents app, then tap on NETWORK in Readdle Documents and look for your student’s iPad, which will appear under Available Devices on the NETWORK tab.
3) Tap on your Student’s iPad and then you will be able to copy items from their iPad to your’s.

Workflow #3 - Publishing Content from iWorks apps (e.g. Keynote, Pages) on Student’s iPad directly to the Teacher’s iPad using Readdle’s Documents app.
Scenario: My students have spent the last week creating their Keynote presentation. I’d like students to share a copy of their presentation with me. How can I get them to share to my iPad from their iPad without having to mess with a computer?

Student iPad Instructions - Sharing Your iWorks document
1) Open the iWorks app you want to share from (e.g. Keynote), then view your presentation.
2) To share your Keynote presentation, tap on the wrench in the top right-hand corner and choose Share and Print option.
3) Select the Copy to WebDAV option. You’ll be prompted for a Server address, a username and password. Ask your teacher for the server address (which is the IP address for his/her iPad) and type it into the server address, then tap on “sign in.”
4) Once you are connected, you’ll be able to choose the file format you want to share the
presentation in--Keynote, Powerpoint, PDF. If you want your teacher to be able to edit the Keynote,
send the keynote version.

Teacher iPad Instructions: Copying Files to Where You Can Work With Them (Student iPad)
1) Open Readdle Documents app, then tap on NETWORK in Readdle Documents.
2) Turn your iPad into a WebDAV server by tapping on the WiFi Drive icon in the top right-hand corner (you’ll only see it if you’ve already tapped on NETWORK tab while in Readdle Documents.
3) Share your iPad’s IP address or name with your students; here’s an example but the numbers will be different depending on your network:

You can share either address. Note that if you are going to be sharing often, the bottom address is less likely to change over time.

Workflow #5 - Saving Content from iWorks apps (e.g. Keynote, Pages) to Google Drive using Open in Another App.
Scenario: My students have spent serious time creating their Keynote presentation and I’d like them to have a copy of it in Keynote or Powerpoint format, even if they don’t have an iPad. Can they save their Keynote file to Google Drive, work on it with their Mac computer (which has Keynote), save it back to Google Drive, then open it on their school iPad while in class?

Student iPad Instructions - Saving to Google Drive
1) Open the iWorks app you want to share from (e.g. Keynote), then view your presentation.
2) To share your Keynote presentation, tap on the wrench in the top right-hand corner and choose Share and Print option.
3) Select the Open in Another App option. You’ll be prompted to choose a format. Choose Keynote for this example, although you can choose the others (e.g. PDF, PowerPoint).
4) Once your presentation is ready, a blue button with white letters will appear that says, Choose
App.
5) When you tap that button, you’ll be given a list of apps. Look for the Open in Google Drive button/option and select it.
6) The GoogleDrive app will pop up and ask you, Would you like to upload presentationname.key to Drive? Choose the Upload option that appears below the question. Wait patiently as your presentation is put on Google Drive.
7) You can easily get a copy of the presentationname.key file and save it on your computer, then put it back on Google Drive, and re-open it.

Opening a Keynote File Stored in Google Drive
1) Start the Google Drive app on your iPad
2) Find the Keynote presentation file you previously saved either from your computer or iPad.
3) Tap on the file. When it pops up a message that it is Unable to open file, go to the sharing button in the top right-hand corner of the screen and tap on it.
4) Choose Open in... and select the Open in Keynote option. This will import your presentation into Keynote.
