Access your campus library from home via the Web!
Thanks to the hard work of ECISD Librarians--in particular, Jennifer Smith at Legacy MS--and ECTO team members, Tom Grove (Network Systems Engineer) and Calvin Orsak (Technology Systems Integration Manager), students and staff can now access the Alexandria Library Catalog from home or via the Internet. In the days to come, students and staff will be able to use a special address when they are away from a school district computer. "Library automation refers to the use of computers to automate the typical procedures of libraries such as cataloging and circulation" (Source: Wikipedia).
Access can take place via an Internet Browser (such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or MS Internet Explorer). This is helpful for students who need to access resources from home, including eBooks. The ECTO team is working with District librarians to facilitate Alexandria-OverDrive integration. If you're not familiar with OverDrive, it allows students to check out eBooks for use on mobile devices. The EC High School--under the leadership of Lisa Merrifield, ECHS Librarian--began OverDrive initiative earlier this school year. The OverDrive initiative enjoyed support from a team of ECISD librarians and district staff.
The process for making Alexandria more accessible began in November, 2012 when research began on how to make Alexandria accessible outside of the District's intranet, which allowed only computers connected to the District's network to access Alexandria Library Automation System. Thanks to Jennifer Smith, Tom Grove and Calvin Orsak, the District made significant strides forward, beating its internal deadline of April 1, 2013 as when Alexandria would be available to library patrons--students and staff--for external access (e.g. from home) via the Internet.
Look for the Internet links to be available soon. Note that these links will only work from a non-District computer or device that is NOT connected to the District's network.
To access Alexandria in the District, simply click on the "In-District" link above. For external access from home on a non-District network, use the easy 2-step process outlined below.
Here's a quick overview of the process.
Step 1 - Click on the link for your campus.
When you click, you may see a screen that looks like the following:
Click "PROCEED ANYWAY."
Step 2 - Begin using Alexandria as you normally do.
Wasn't that easy?
For more information, you are encouraged to contact your campus librarian.
